Watkins Seeks to Eliminate Fuel Tax

Watkins files bill to eliminate fuel tax.

TOPEKA - A House bill to repeal the state's 24-cent fuel tax was introduced Wednesday, raising the hackles of highway supporters who say the loss of revenues would stop the state's final phases of its 10-year road building and repair program.

A Wichita lawmaker sought the measure, saying the $450 million hit to highway funding could be replaced with dollars from the state general tax fund, which is largely dedicated to schools, universities and medical care.

"With the current growth in the Kansas economy and the subsequent increase in the state's tax receipt, the Legislature has the opportunity to give Kansans real relief at the pumps," said Rep. Jason Watkins, R-Wichita.

Kansas Legislature

Kansas has 125 representatives and 40 senators serving its 105 counties throughout the state.

The Legislature was in session for 93 days for the 2006 annual legislative session starting January 9 and concluding May 25.
